Afib Ablation

The EP lab is a room where you will find the specialized equipment needed to perform procedures to treat cardiac rhythm disorders. It is usually located in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

What types of equipment will you find in the EP Lab?

Guidance

  • Fluoroscopy system: The x-ray equipment used to guide catheters during procedures in real-time is called fluoroscopy.
  • Ultrasound equipment: Ultrasound can be used for transthoracic and intracardiac echocardiography (ICE). ICE is utilized during most ablation procedures to allow real-time visualization of the heart tissue and the catheters within one’s body. ICE has improved EP procedures’ safety and allowed us to reduce reliance on fluoroscopy (X-ray).

Mapping system:

Allows physicians to build a 3D reconstruction of the heart while understanding the path of the arrhythmias we aim to treat.

Carto Mapping System

Recording System:

Using specialized catheters we measure the electrical activity of the heart tissue to allow us to understand the electrical system of the heart.
